Margaret L. Birch, age 88, passed away peacefully and surrounded by her loving family on October 31, 2018 at Glendale Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center. She was born on February 15, 1930 Margaret Lillian LaGraff to George and Ruby Ralston LaGraff. Margaret graduated from Nott Terrace High School in 1947 and married Robert G. Miller February 15, 1948 and together they had four children. She married her second husband James (Bob) Birch on June 23, 1965 and they spent a very happy next 53 years.
Margaret worked for many years as a Guidance Office Secretary at Burnt Hills- Ballston Lake Central School District. She held a special place in her heart for the lonely students who would come to chat with her. She was the director of the youth choir at Alplaus Methodist Church for several years in the 1960’s. Maggie enjoyed nature and animals. Her love for trees and shade gardens was passed down to her daughters. Above everything else, Maggie was in her glory when the family gathered together. She savored those moments and aspired to keep them often.
Margaret is survived by her loving husband, James R. Birch; her beloved children Terry J. Rafferty, Daniel G. (Carol) Miller, Suzanne R. (Max) Birdsall and Mark G. (Christine) Miller; her loving grandchildren Joshua (Hillary) Witkowski, Sarah (Grayson) Strange, Molly (Jack) McCaffrey, Dana Miller, Robby Miller, Sean Fortune, and Ryan Fortune; her adoring great-grandchildren Neil McCaffrey, Pearl Strange and Killian Miller; her sister and best friend, Ruth Ann (Richard) Phillips and her brother, John (Susan) LaGraff; and several loving nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Saturday, November 10, 2018 from 10:00AM-11:00AM at Townley and Wheeler Funeral Home, 21 Midline Road Ballston Lake, New York 12019. Funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM.
Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Burnt Hills, New York.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society, 53 Maple Avenue, Schenectady, New York 12302.
