Obituary for Richard E Oboyski

Richard E. Oboyski, 79, of Burnt Hills NY and Surfside Beach SC, passed peacefully in to the arms of our Lord on January 25, 2017. He died at home, as he wished, surrounded by his loving family.
Richard was born and raised in Albany NY, attended The Glass School and graduated from Vincentian Institute. He was a US Army veteran and worked at Niagara Mohawk for ten years before earning his undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University at Albany. He served as the Director of Financial Aid at Mohawk Valley Community College, Schenectady County Community College, SUNY Cobleskill and assisted at Excelsior College after retirement. During his thirty-five year career, Richard was active in the NYS Financial Aid Association as a mentor and organizer, especially among his “Macho” group. He was a board member and past-president of the Board of Directors of the Rotterdam Boys and Girls Club.
Richard enjoyed the company of lifelong friends and afternoons at the beach with his wife, Anne. He organized family events including twenty-nine years of Father’s Day Elms Weekends, family cruises at Christmas and ‘Cigars under the Stars’ with his son and sons-in-law, and G’pa days with his grandchildren. Richard and Anne served as foster parents to countless infants and children in Schenectady, Albany, and Oneida Counties for more than twenty years.
Left to remember and honor him are his wife of 59 years and love of his life, Anne K. (Slyer) Oboyski, and his children Katherine Oboyski-Butler and Robert Butler, Tracy Oboyski Grant, Christine Oboyski Bolton and William Bolton, Deborah Oboyski Carlsen and Gary Carlsen, Joseph Oboyski, and Alan King. He was the proud grandfather of Devin, Holly, Abigail, Thomas, Emily, Elizabeth, Shane, Melissa, Erin, Lindsey, Carly, and Julia and beloved great-grandfather of Eleanor and Jacob. He is survived by his brother David Oboyski, sister Susan Mehringer, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Richard was predeceased by his parents Sidmore and Thelma Oboyski, and brothers R. Bruce and Paul.
