Obituary for Robert E. Letendre

Dateline: Saratoga Springs, NY
Robert Emery Letendre died at the home of his daughter on December 21, 2018 of complications from injuries sustained as a passenger in an unexplained, one vehicle crash near Aguascalientes, Mexico in April 2015. His ex-girlfriend was the driver.
Born on March 7, 1937 in Springfield, MA to Emery and Cecil (Paige) Letendre, he was one of five children.
He served in the United States Air Force as jet engine mechanic from 1954 to 1958, attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant in just four years. He also earned his GED while in the Air Force.
Robert was a retired union electrician and a proud member of the IBEW Local 166, where his son was also a member. Post retirement he was an antiques dealer (and local legend) who specialized in vintage clothing, linens, and antique lighting fixtures which he would expertly rewire and refurbish. He never drove by a garage, yard, or estate sale without stopping. He was a master at odd jobs, building, and repairing things for his family. These were affectionately known as “Bob Jobs”. He could fix damn near anything.
Robert volunteered for Habitat for Humanity where his construction skills were put to good use and he made lifelong friends. He sometimes accompanied his daughter to peace rallies and marched with Veterans for Peace in local parades.
As the last surviving son and uncle, he was the family patriarch. He saw this role as his sacred duty and took it very seriously. He was happiest when he was with his family, especially with his grand and great grandchildren whom he treasured.
He wintered in Mexico for the last 15 years and had a profound love for that country, its people, and customs. He had many dear friends in Guadalajara and Ajijic who considered him family and loved him dearly.
Robert was predeceased by his parents, his two brothers, Donald and Kenneth, and his nephew David Brown.
Robert is survived by his daughter, Linda LeTendre (Volney LaRowe) of Saratoga Springs NY, his son, Thomas Letendre (Darlene) of Charlton, NY, his treasured granddaughters Nicole Carrero (Dominick) and their daughter Ella and son Carson, and Marissa Wilbur (Michael) and their son Beckett; all live in Lexington SC. He is also survived by two sisters. Carol Baer of Greenfield, NY and Joyce Grimes of Wilmberly, TX, and his beloved cousin, Pierre Chavalier, and his family in Palmer, MA. In addition, he is survived by his cherished nieces and nephews, Donald, Laura, Steven, and Kathleen Letendre, Lisa and Matthew Brown, Michael, Kathleen, Lynn, and Daniel Grimes.
A memorial is being planned for April 13, 2019. People wishing to attend should contact Townley Wheeler Funeral Home at (518) 399-5022 or townleywheelerfh@gmail.com for an invitation. In the meantime, the family invites you to perform a random act of kindness in his honor.
