Obituary for Sofia V. Gouvis

Sofia (Vasilakos) Gouvis, age 88, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, July 23, 2015 at Saratoga Center for Rehabilitation & Skilled Nursing Center. She was a resident of Mari Nol Drive in Clifton Park for many years. Sofia was born on November 27, 1926 in Skoura-Sparta, Greece and was the daughter of the late Demetrios and Zoe (Pantelakos) Vasilakos. Sofia was predeceased by her son, James in February of 2015, her brother, Anastasios Vasilakos in 1999 and her brother-in-law, John Counavelis in 1993. Mrs. Gouvis emigrated to the United States on August 21, 1967 and lived in Long Island and the Capital District since then. She was a talented seamstress and worked for Ursula of Switzerland in Schenectady, NY and several factories in Freeport, NY. Sofia was a long time and active member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Schenectady and a proud member of the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptocos Society.
Sofia leaves behind her beloved son, Steve (Kimberly Hogle) Gouvis of Clifton Park, NY, her brother, Peter Vasilakos (Christina) of Clifton Park, NY, her sister, Rena Counavelis of Scotia, NY, four grandchildren, Sofia (Blake) Stevenson, Stephanie Gouvis (Sean McCarthy), Chastity Gouvis and Zoe Gouvis, and her sister-in-law, Mary Vasilakos of Merrick, NY. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are warmly welcomed to call on Sunday, July 26, 2015 from 5:00 PM ā€“ 8:00 PM at Catricala Funeral Home. A Trisagion service/Memorial service will be held at 6:00 PM .
Funeral will begin on Monday, July 27, 2015 at 8:45 AM from Catricala Funeral Home, 1597 Route 9, Clifton Park, NY 12065 and process to St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 107 Clinton St., Schenectady, NY where at 10:15 AM a funeral service will be held.
Interment will be in Parkview Cemetery, Schenectady, where she will join her son, Jimmy.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. George Greek Orthodox Church.
