William J. McKenna, age 65, of Saratoga Road, died suddenly on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at his home. He was born on August 2, 1950 in Ballston Lake, NY and resided in the area all of his life.
Bill built and owned McKenna’s greenhouse when he was 20 years old. Bill was encouraged by his life time friend Dick Hewitt. Bill was a highly regarded and very successful wholesale grower on the New England Coast during the 70’s and 80’s he moved his business to route 50 and established retail and became known as the “Bear Man”. in the early 90’s. During 2006 with the help of a wonderful man, owner of Country Acres, Terry Breen, Bill reconstructed his greenhouse practice and seasonal business again becoming successful as a proprietor at this location. Bill played football for BHBL and was in a band called the misfits at an early age of 16. He was self- taught on the drums. He was a model ship builder, history buff and loved his documentaries on science/history or nature. He had an immense love for his family and friends. Bill loved his wife and children and encouraged them with his gentle manner. He loved his side kick Bella and he will be greatly missed.
He was the husband of Cynthia L. McKenna; father of Angelina McKenna, Jesse (Taylor) McKenna and Dareth (Jeff) McKenna; brother of Alma (Kevin) Alexander; son-in-law of Dolores Smith; brother-in-law of Scott (Janice) Smith, Matthew Smith and Mark Smith; uncle of Michael Alexander, Matthew Jr., Jessica and Keri Smith. Bill was pre deceased by his brother Michael McKenna parents, Michael and Marjorie McKenna, his step- father, Lawrence Duquette and his father-in-law, William Smith.
Funeral will be held on Friday, May 13, 2016 at 7:00 PM at Townley & Wheeler Funeral Home, 21 Midline Road, Ballston Lake, NY. Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Friday from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the funeral home prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the E. Glenville Fire Dept., 433 Saratoga Road, Glenville, NY 12302 or to Glenville Veterinary Clinic, 458 Saratoga Road, Scotia, NY 12303.
