Obituary for Roland Newton

Roland Newton
of Binghamton
Roland Newton, 85, of Binghamton passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 14, 2007. He was predeceased by: his loving wife of 55 years, Martha B. Newton (Bowers); his son, Rollie Newton; and his brother, Grant Newton. He is survived by; his son, Gary Newton; his step-son, John Heally and wife Carol; special niece and nephew, Kathy and Alan Newton; special sister-in-law, Ann Newton; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many other relatives. Newt opened and operated Newtons Collision in Conklin and served the public as a body and fender repairman for over 20 years. His love of cars was expressed with Newt and Martha owning their own race car "Lawless 66 and racing weekends in Oswego, NY. Their passion for Manhattans and good friends led the two of them to open the Melody Lounge in Conklin. In later years his late son Rollie turned the bar into Mobil Auto Care before his untimely passing. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the Army with tours in the European, African, and Middle Eastern Theatres. He was a Member of American Legion Post 1845 in Conklin, Mason, member of the Kalurah Temple, and the Conklin Ave First Baptist Church. Many thanks to: Kathy Newton, a very special niece who loved and cared for him just like a father; his dear nephew Alan who he loved to share jokes with often; to his long-time friend Billy Gazda for his friendship and support over the years; his good neighbors and friends, George, Georgia, Herbie, Lucky, Charlie, and Cheri.
Funeral and committal services will be held 1:00 pm Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at the Savage Funeral Home, 338-344 Conklin Ave., Binghamton. The family will welcome friends Wednesday from 11:00 am until the time of service at the Savage Funeral Home. Burial will be in Kirkwood Cemetery in the family plot. Memorial contributions may be made to the Conklin Ave 1st Baptist Church, 91 Baldwin St. Binghamton, NY 13903 in memory of Newt. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.savagefs.com.
