Belle Q. Ryder Obituary

Belle Q. Ryder of North Salem, New York, died Friday June 24, 2011 in North Salem at the age of 100.
She was born Aug. 20, 1910 daughter of the late Sherman and Joanna (Parris) Quinn. Mrs. Ryder grew up in a family of thirteen children in Gaffney, SC. She was seven when her mother died so her older siblings raised her. She in turn helped raise her two younger sisters.
While coming of age during the Great Depression, she experienced firsthand the hardships that occurred during that time. She lived the rest her life according to the lessons learned from that tumultuous era. She was a stay – at – home mother, later working as a waitress at several local restaurants before becoming a social worker for Westchester County.
She was very fond of her husband Philip Ryder whom she married June 1934 in Pawling, NY, his family and their homestead, The Ryder Farm on Starr Ridge Rd. in Brewster, NY. That bond became cemented after she and her husband ran the Ryder Farm during World War II. She formed lifelong friendships with the Ryder Family and moved back to the Farm in 1980 following retirement. While living there she produced many cases of “Cousin Belle’s” fruit jams which were high in demand at the Farm’s booth in the New York City Greenmarket during the 1980’s and 1990’s.
Mrs. Ryder was predeceased by her husband Philip in 1976 and a son William in 1961. She is survived by her two children; Nancy Farrell of Camarillo, CA, and Alan Ryder of North Salem, a sister Eunice Kash of Kings Park, NY seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Friends are invited to a Celebration of Belle’s life at The Ryder Farm, 402 Starr Ridge Rd., Brewster, NY from 12 Noon until 4 PM on Friday, July 1.
In lieu of flowers contributions in her memory may be made to "SPACE on Ryder Farm, 402 Starr Ridge Rd., Brewster, NY 10509
