Maley, Frederick ‘Fred’ K., age 81, of Brewster, NY, died December 1, 2015 in Danbury, CT.

Fred was born on July 28, 1934 in Manhattan, NY to Frank and Elsie (Minde) Maley. He graduated from The High School of Art of Design in Manhattan, NY. While he attended The High School of Art and Design he was a jewelers apprentice for Ed Levin and continued his relationship with Mr. Levin at his shops in Vermont. After his apprenticeship he focused on his education. Receiving a bachelor’s degree from Oswego College in Industrial Arts and his master’s degree in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education from NYU.

On May 1, 1965 Fred married Beth Sonderskov in Summit, New Jersey. He and Beth moved to Brewster, NY in 1969. Together they were members of the First United Methodist Church of Brewster.

Fred began his career as a teacher of the deaf in NYC before continuing as a special education teacher at BOCES in Yorktown, NY before retiring in 1991.

Fred was a true craftsman, be it jewelry, caning chairs or refinishing furniture, Fred insisted on taking his time to perfect his craft. He could be found renovating a building or two as well. He greatly enjoyed tag sales, discovering items that he might redesign to his liking or discover a valuable antique along the way. His love of the outdoors was evident be it spending time at his cabin in Vermont or simply splitting wood.

Fred is survived by his loving wife Beth and his two children, Alison Voisine and her husband James of Burlington, CT and Matthew Maley and his wife Andrienne of New Paltz, NY, his sister Marian Krele of Flushing, Queens, NY. Also his three granddaughters; Lianna Maley, and Lyla and June Voisine. He was predeceased by his brother Frank Maley.

A memorial Service will be held on Sunday, December 13, 2015 1pm at the First United Methodist Church of Brewster, 83 Main Street, Brewster, NY. A private cremation was held earlier. Beecher Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements. www.Beecherfuneralhome.com
