Mary E. McCarthy Obituary

Mary E. McCarthy, age 87, died peacefully in the company of family on March 22, 2016 in New Fairfield, CT. Mary had been a long standing resident of Brewster, NY and had lived in Boynton Beach, FL since 1998.
Mary was born on October 31, 1928 to Sarah (Russell) and John Kearns of New Rochelle, NY. Born and raised in New Rochelle, Mary found great kinship and comfort growing up with her sisters and her connection to the extended Kearns family of Orange, NJ. Her memories of exploring her father’s greenhouses and plantings, walking the shores of Davenport Neck on Long Island Sound, and visiting her cousins were a lifelong treasure to her.
Upon completing her studies at St. Gabriel’s High School, she earned a Bachelor of Arts at the College of New Rochelle. She left with an enduring network of friends and a strong lifelong connection to the school. Her respect for learning and principled thought would serve as the moral compass of her life and was a positive influence to those around her. Before choosing marriage and motherhood, Mary spent a short time with the Presentation Sister Catholic Order as she contemplated her life path.
Mary married John J. McCarthy of New Rochelle. They started a family in New Rochelle and soon relocated to Bay Shore, NY before settling in Brewster NY in 1961. Mary was a member of the St. Lawrence O’Toole parish, was active in church and civic activities, and taught at local schools.
Her family was always her first priority and we are grateful for her unwavering love and support and the quiet nurture and wisdom that characterized her direction to us.
Mary enjoyed the last extended chapter in her life in Boynton Beach where God blessed her with continued health and independence. It allowed her to enjoy new friends, a warm climate, and her many activities most notably swimming, reading, and visits from family.
Mary is survived by her five children: John K. McCarthy and his wife Deborah, Ann V. McCarthy, Mary Kate McCarthy, Eileen McCarthy DeSantis and her husband Thomas DeSantis, and their children Mary Grace; Thomas, and John:; and Thomas B. McCarthy and his wife Catherine, and their children Sara, Crystal, and Ryan.
She is also survived by her sister, Joan Eddy. She was predeceased by her parents and two sisters, Helen Kearns and Helen Senno.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 28, 2016 at St. Lawrence O’Toole Church, Brewster, NY at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at St. Lawrence O’Toole Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2016 from 4:00 PM-8:00 PM at Beecher Funeral Home, 1 Putnam Avenue, Brewster, NY. In lieu of flowers, you can honor Mary's memory by making a donation to the charity of your choice.
