Thomas A. Smith, recently of Brookfield, CT and formerly of Ridgewood, NJ, died with his sisters by his side at Danbury Hospital Center on August 8, 2017. He was 88 years old.
Mr. Smith was born on September 13, 1928 in the Bronx, NY, son of the late Michael Joseph and Mary (Duff) Smith. He was a graduate of LaSalle Academy in Manhattan, NY and received his bachelor’s degree from Fordham University.
In May of 1957 he married the love of his life Gertrude Judge in Brooklyn, NY. Gertrude predeceased her husband on January 8, 1998.
Thomas was a research flavor chemist for many companies including Holland House. He worked for A&P in his younger years. Thomas enjoyed summers in Putnam Lake, NY in the late 1940’s to the 1950’s and fishing in his youth. He had a photographic memory which made reading about history and other interests very enjoyable for him.
Mr. Smith is survived by his three sisters; Mary Sullivan of Danbury, CT, Eileen Burdick of Brewster, NY, and Catherine Valente of Naples, FL, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by not only his wife, Gertrude, but his daughter; Carol Patricia Smith in 2006 and his three siblings; Michael Joseph Jr., Ann Marie Gremler and Margaret Gansert.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, August 12, 2017 9:30am at St. Josephs R.C. Church, 8 Robinson Ave., Danbury, CT. Interment will follow in his family crypt at Ascension Cemetery in Monsey, NY (Rockland County). Friends and family may call the Beecher Funeral Home, 1 Putnam Avenue, Brewster, NY on Friday, August 11, 2017 from 4pm-8pm.
In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Thomas may be made to the American Lung Association; 116 John St., 30th floor, New York, NY, 10038.
