Henry Gallop Obituary

Henry Burk Gallop Junior was born on September 20, 1938 in Jarvisburg, North Carolina to Henry Burk Gallop Senior and Rosie Virginia (Saunders) Gallop. At a young age, Henry's family moved to Harlem, New York, which is where he was raised. In 1956, Henry graduated from the High School of Fashion Industries, majoring in carpentry and furniture design. He met and married Odessa Elizabeth Easley on October 9, 1965. The couple had two daughters, Odetta Dee and Vernetta Dionne. They raised their family in the Bronx, New York where Henry served dutifully as a New York City Transit Police officer for over 20 years. Prior to that, he worked as a train conductor for the NYC subway system. Upon retiring from the NYPD, Henry worked briefly for the United States Postal Service then worked in security for a number of years before retiring completely in 2000. Henry was a boxer in his teenage years with the Golden Gloves organization and he always enjoyed watching professional boxing matches. His favorite boxer was Joe Louis. He was a devoted father and grandfather and loved nothing more than to spend time with his family. Everyone he knew felt his optimistic spirit. Once Henry knew you, you would never be treated as less than family. He particularly loved going out to nice restaurants and enjoying a good steak and lobster. Henry served as a deacon for several years at his church and had a passion for reading the Bible. His favorite scripture was Psalm 23. His favorite color was blue. Henry is survived by his wife, Odessa; daughters, Odetta Gallop and Vernetta Gallop-Johnson (Gregory); granddaughter, Simone Wingate; grandson, Kyhel King; sister, Sabrina Gallop; and a host of extended family and friends. He is predeceased by his father, Henry Gallop Senior; mother, Rosie Gallop; and brother, Daniel Wilson Gallop. Henry was called home to be with the Lord on September 13, 2020, with his loving family at his bedside.
