Rosa Del Rio Obituary

Rosa Minerva (Torres) Del Rio November 17, 1927 – July 17, 2019 (Aged 91) 91, of The Bronx, NY and Jarabacoa, D.R., passed away peacefully in the company of her loving family and her God, at the William Childs Hospice House in Palm Bay, Florida. She was the wife of the late Luis E. Del Rio. Born in Villa Lobos, District of Monte Cristi in the Dominican Republic, she was the daughter of Abraham Jose Torres and Josefa Antonia (Garcia) Torres. Minerva was the devoted mother of Luis Del Rio, Jr. (Jane) of Cranston, RI, Lionel ‘Leo’ Del Rio of Soundview in the Bronx, NY and father of her grandchildren, and Lillian Del Rio (Jerry Garcia) of W. Melbourne, FL who were her daily caregivers for the past ten years. Additionally, she was the doting grandmother of four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She also leaves numerous nieces and nephews whom she deeply adored, and she made darn sure that they knew it. Minerva was predeceased by her eight siblings: Aida Torres-Honoret, Jose Abraham Torres, Amado Torres, German Alvarez, Nidio Torres, Aida Venecia Torres-Crisóstomo, Tinita A. Torres and Josefa A. Torres-Rosario. In 1948 at the age of 22, Minerva immigrated to the United States becoming a sewing machine operator working full time in New York City’s garment industry, and part-time in her cousin’s dress shop in The Bronx. There she met the recently emigrated Puerto Rican young man she would marry a year later, and together they raised three children on the meager earnings of a seamstress and a Marine Corps PFC. They resided in Soundview for many years. Minerva maintained the dual citizenship of the United States and her native Dominican Republic where she enjoyed vacationing with her husband, her children and most of all her grandchildren. Her love of music and dancing was contagious; her practical jokes remain infamous; her cooking to die for; her love of God, family and country was boundless; and she traveled the globe. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, July 24 at 10 a.m. in the Schuyler Hill Funeral Home, 3535 E. Tremont Ave., Bronx, NY; Followed by a Funeral Home service at 11:30 a.m. She will be laid to rest in Saint Raymond Cemetery in the Bronx, alongside the Marine who was her husband for 61 years.
