Brother Martin Thomas Ruane, FMS, a member of the Marist Brothers of the Schools for 66 years, died on July 8, 2016 at Champagnat Hall in the Bronx. He was 83 years old.
Brother Martin was born in NYC. He attended the Marist Brothers Juniorate from 1947- 1949. He became a postulant with the Marist Brothers in 1949 and entered the Marist Brothers Novitiate at Tyngsboro, Massachusetts in 1950. He professed first vows in 1951. After completing his religious and academic studies at Marist College, Poughkeepsie, New York, he began his ministry serving as a teacher at Mount St. Michael Academy in Bronx, NY from 1955 – 57. He also served as a teacher at Archbishop Molloy in Queens, NY (1957-63), Marist High School in Bayonne, NJ (1963 – 82), Bishop Carroll High School in Ebensburg, PA (1982-86), Roselle Catholic HS (1986 – 90).
He professed his final vows in 1956. He also earned two Masters degrees during his lifetime. The first an MA in English from St. John’s University in 1961 and the second an MA in French from Seton Hall University in 1970.
Later in his career, he served in our Marist missions in Africa at the St. Francis Catholic Mission in Liberia (1990 – 1994), St. Paul’s Bi-lingual College in Cameroon (1994-96), Our Lady of Africa Formation Center, Cameroon (1996-97) and in Monrovia, Liberia (1999).
He served the homeless community of Wheeling, West Virginia at the Catholic Neighborhood Center from 1997-1999 and again from 1999 – 2007.
He retired to the Marist Brothers community in Roselle, NJ in 2007, He remained there until 2015 when he moved for medical reasons to Champagnat Hall in Bronx, NY.
Brother Martin was the son of Michael Ruane and Sabina (Kenny) Ruane. He is survived by his sister, Maureen Delepine, his many nieces and nephews and his grand nieces and grand nephews as well as by his Marist Brothers of the Province of the United States. He is predeceased by his sister, Norma Ruane, his brother-in-law Francis X. Delepine, his nephew Taylor Ruane Delepine and his niece Lauren Delepine.
