Donald L. Sullivan Obituary

In Memory of Donald L. Sullivan March 4, 1927 – January 19, 2018 Donald (fondly know as Pop), Sullivan 90, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 19th at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx surrounded by family members. Donald was born and raised in the Castle Hill Section of the Bronx. He was a WWII veteran joining the Navy at the age of 17 and was honorably discharged. He married the love of his life, Mary Corbett on September 19, 1948. They moved to Silver Beach Gardens here in the Bronx. Before they married, Don told Mary that he wanted at least 5 Children. Mary said “we’ll see”. They were blessed with 7 children, Dennis, Thomas, Diane, Donna, Kathleen, Mary Anne & Susan. In all he had 17 grandchildren & 7 great grandchildren After the wedding, Donald worked for the NYC transit authority, driving buses in Queens. He joined FDNY in 1954. No one loved being a firefighter more than Donald. He established many friendships over the years and he would tell stories about his FDNY brothers who were now part of our family… He retired in 1976 but kept in touch with many of his colleagues. He went to work for the Ornamental Iron Workers Union several years later. In 2004, Mary passed away at the age of 77, also in Calvary Hospital. Don said that if he died right now after Mary that he would have absolutely no regrets. He said “I lived an amazing life. “Your mother and I did everything we wanted to do”… Don loved Silver Beach and was the lifeguard for many years. He taught most of the kids in the neighborhood how to swim and he formed the first life guard unit in the mid 1960’s. Don also served on several neighborhood committees and on the SBG Coop Board of Directors. He was a faithful member of St. Frances de Chantal Church, where he and Mary attended regularly until they relocated to Florida in 1998. They both loved their lake house in Maine and spent many of summers there. They loved to travel especially cruising. In 2006, Pop always wanted to go to Ireland so we took him with us. He loved every minute of that trip…we were all over Northern Ireland, visiting extended family and friends… When I remember my Dad I will always remember him as a fun loving, adventurous man…He taught us well. He loved sailing, fishing, snorkeling and scuba driving…he will be missed but I know he is a peace with my mother. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the doctors, nurses & staff at Calvary Hospital for the kindness and compassion. Also the funeral directors Ralph Squitieri, Sr. & Ralph Squitieri, Jr. for their guidance… God gives us comfort in the form of good Family & Friends, may His peace be with you and His love never end.
