John Vallis Obituary

Born in Greece, John Vallis came to America as a young boy. His family settled on the lower east side. After serving in the Pacific with the US Navy during World II, John came back to New York and settled in Astoria, where he met his wife Sultana (Sally) Stathis. He began his club management career first as assistant manager at the Fifth Avenue Restaurant, then as Food and Beverage manager at the Hotel Croyden. In 1951 they moved to Westchester county and John, known as “Jack”began a 46 year career in Country Club management . He spent sixteen years at the Vernon Hills Country Club in Eastchester. Jack then followed several of his former Vernon Hills members to their new venture, Brae Burn Country Club. There he oversaw the startup of a new club and remained there thirty years, before retiring in 1996. He was a 50 year member of the Metropolitan Chapter of the Club Management Association of America. During retirement Jack served the Chapter well, chairing both the membership and social function committees. Perhaps his greatest contribution was helping organize the AABR charity tournaments for a number of years, for which he was honored in 1984. During John’s later years, he and Sally spent most of their free time at their home on Long Beach Island New Jersey. When he crossed over the causeway onto LBI he left the work world behind and truly relaxed. He enjoyed his 7am weekly golf outing with his close friends. He loved riding his bike to Barnegat Lighthouse everyday where he would read his book and have his lunch. He was passionate about golf, his garden and his family. He is predeceased by his wife, Sally. He is survived by his daughters, Stephanie and Maryann (Jeffrey), and his son John (Dorilee), 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
