Obituary for Alice Dann

Alice Marie Dann, 69, of Lincoln Avenue, Groton, died Friday, September 22, 2017 at the Cortland Regional Medical Center after becoming ill at home.

Alice was born April 1, 1948 in Johnson City, NY a daughter of the late Charles M. and Lucille “Lucy” Jane Gunderman Ely.

A resident of the Groton area since her early high school years, she attended Groton Central School.

Alice worked at Smith Corona, Marietta as a packer trainer, XCP as a receptionist, Colonial Dry Cleaners and Lou's Pizza Shop for several years. She provided daycare for many years to children who to this day still call her “Grandma Alice”.

Alice was known for her ruthless card playing especially pitch and phase ten. She bowled for many years in the Sunday Night Womens League at the Corona Club and was a Den Mother in the Groton Cub Scouts when her children were young.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Carlton T. Dann I at home; her children, Delsy (David) DeMatteo of Groton, Brian Dann of Groton, James Dann of Cortland and Carlton T. (C.T.) Dann, II of Groton; 3 grandchildren, Deidre (Allen) Gallow, Dominik DeMatteo and Cassidy Dann; her siblings, Charles Ely, George Ely and Cherry Carley of West Endicott, NY as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and her daycare children.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Barbara Jean Sherwood and Sandy Slack.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 29th, 11:00 am at the Zirbel Funeral Home, 115 Williams Street, Groton. Friends may call Thursday from 3:00 to 7:00 pm at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Groton Fire Department Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 96, Groton, NY 13073.
