Obituary

John M. LeFevre, 97, of Hamilton, NY, passed away Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at Community Memorial Hospital in Hamilton. John was born on March 10, 1919 in New Paltz, NY a son of Johannes and Faye MacFerran LeFevre. He was a graduate of the Northwood School in Lake Placid and Colgate University, Class of 1941. John played hockey in high school and college, and he was a member of the Maroon Raiders jazz band at Colgate. From 1942 to 1946, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain. On April 10, 1943, John married Marian Laidlaw in Kingston, NY. They were blessed with a union of over 61 years when she predeceased him on September 10, 2004. In his professional life, John worked for IBM for 40 years, and was promoted from sales through management positions, retiring as a senior executive reporting to the CEO, making policy decisions for the corporation. He then began his second career at Colgate University as a Special Assistant to the Dean of Admissions, enjoying 13 years of service. He dedicated an additional 22 years as a volunteer, continuing through the planning of his 75th reunion to be held in June 2016. He was actively involved in the Colgate community as President of Silver Puck Club, President of the Alumni Corporation Board of Directors, recipient of the Maroon Citation, the Alumni Award for Distinguished Service and the Silver Puck Award, and a member of the Presidents Club, the Colgate Club of Chenango Valley and the Hamilton Old Timers Club. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Hamilton. For over 35 years, he welcomed students and their families to his beloved Colgate, establishing relationships that continued to this day. As anyone who met John will attest, he was generous, genuine, honest, caring, dedicated and loyal. His positive outlook was contagious and an inspiration to all who had the good fortune of knowing him. A loving family man, John is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Richard Haller of Victor, NY; his daughter-in-law, Marsha LeFevre of Plymouth, MN; sister-in-law, Carol LeFevre of Gwynedd, PA; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Don and Joyce Laidlaw of Bluffton, SC; grandchildren, Tricia and Pat Connors of Mendon, NY; John and Khristan Haller of New York City; Dan LeFevre, David and Kristen LeFevre, and Michelle LeFevre, all of Minneapolis, MN; eleven great-grandchildren, Ryan, Molly, Claire, Maeve, Isabel, Charlotte, Olivia, William, Eden, Jayden and Michael; and countless friends. He is also survived by his special friend, Mary Clifford of Rome, NY. He was predeceased by his son, John “Mac” LeFevre, Jr., and brother, Perry LeFevre. A Memorial Service to celebrate John’s life will be held at 2pm Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at the Colgate Chapel in Hamilton with a reception to follow. Interment is private at the convenience of his family in the New Paltz Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Colgate University Silver Puck or John and Marian LeFevre Scholarship, c/o Colgate University, 13 Oak Dr., Hamilton, NY 13346; or to the Thousand Island Park Foundation, PO Box 1103, Thousand Island Park, NY 13692.
