Joan M. Santacross, 87, formally of Amesbury, MA, Newburyport, MA and Lincoln, RI (Atria Senior Living) died peacefully on November 11, 2020 at the Vermont Veteran’s Home in Bennington, VT after a period of declining health. She was the beloved wife of the late G. Robert Santacross who died in 1972. Joan was born on March 26, 1933, in Newton, MA, the daughter of the late Charles and Catherine (Cosma) Dokos. She graduated from English High School, Lynn, MA ,in June 1950. She was employed in retail sales for most of her career, most recently The Company Store in Kittery, ME, where she retired in 2016. She was passionate about the theater, arts, travel and music. She especially loved listening to Greek music and “The American Songbook.” Orthodox Easter was always the highlight among holidays. Teaching family traditions and sharing her favorite Greek recipes made an everlasting impression with her grandchildren that they will proudly continue. Joan was an extraordinary women who will be lovingly remembered for her grace and gentle caring nature. She is survived by her children, Katherine Sylvia and her husband Andrew of North Smithfield,RI, Hariclea (Lea) Kostka and her husband Stephen of Lake Elmore,VT, and her son Orestes (Rusty) Santacross and his wife Joyce of Bennington,VT. “Yiayia” was loved and admired by her seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Irene Pappas. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Atria Senior Living, and the Vermont Veteran’s Home for the compassionate and loving care they provided. Due to COVID restrictions, funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
