James VanDerpoel Obituary

James Kenneth VanDerpoel August 24, 1956-September 5, 2019 Too soon, we lost Jim; a great husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, uncle and friend. He was son to the late Kenneth VanDerpoel, father to deceased son, Jimmer VanDerpoel, as well as brother to deceased Dale and Mickey Vanderpoel. Also Lloyd and Nancy Hughes who he lived with in his youth in Towanda, PA. Jim is survived by his wife of 13 years, JoAnn Schwab VanDerpoel of Horseheads. Children Faith(Jason) Murphy of Coshocton, OH. Son, Robert Boynton of Elmira, NY and daughter Angelica Morrow; as well as eight grandchildren. He is survived by mother, Marie Woodruff; sister Tia Slack; and brothers Roger (Brenda) Vanderpoel, Marvin Vanderpoel, Shawn Woodruff, Rick(Joan) Woodruff, Scott(Tammi) Brown; as well as nine nieces and nephews. In his late 30's, Jim went to Alfred University and earned his associates degree in carpentry. He drove from Elmira to Alfred daily in all weather conditons to achieve this degree. After working in carpentry; he changed careers and went to work at Corning Community College in the custodial field. Jim left CCC to work doing his greatest passion as a beef rancher. Jim loved walking amongst his herd of cows. No matter the weather he would go out and tend to the cows; seeing they were well cared for. Jim was proud of being in charge of his last big bull he named Wilson; knowing he could order him around. It was a great day for him when he could grab his lunch pail and spend a day in the tractor making hay. Jim loved camping, horseback riding, and spending time with his dogs, Ragnar and Shane. The family will welcome relatives and friends to come together and celebrate his life at the Veteran Grange on 777 Ridge Rd in Horseheads, NY on September 22, 2019 from 1 P.M. Until 3 P.M. There will be a Memorial Service following.
