Jeannette Berretta Obituary

Jeannette Ann Berretta Horseheads, NY A spark of humor and light, was born in Seneca Falls, NY on April 13, 1956. She died in the early morning of June 16, 2020 in her home in Horseheads, NY of natural causes. She was predeceased by her brother, Guy, and by her parents, Joseph S. and Concetta M. (Bellavia) Berretta. She was the loving friend of Christine M. Lloyd for 40 years and her cherished spouse for the last seven years. Jeannette valued family above all things but running a close second was her love of her nursing profession. She was proud of her BS and MS in Nursing from Syracuse University, becoming a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Mental Health Bereavement Support and Counseling. She also became a Certified Thanatologist, skilled in death, dying and bereavement counseling and support. She was also certified in Critical Incident Stress Response. Jeannette was an intuitive diagnostician, people often finding that she had seen deeper into their symptoms so that they could check further into this with their healthcare providers. Jeannette worked empathically with diverse populations, those who were residents at Newark Developmental Center and Veterans in the VA in Syracuse. She was confident and caring for each individual. Jeannette also co-founded with Chris The Wounded Healers’ Bereavement Support Group, Inc. in 1989. It started in Auburn, added the Southern Tier, and now still continues to be of service in the Southern Tier. This work, besides the monthly free of charge meeting, has provided counseling for bereaved of all ages and all types of deaths of their loved ones. She and Chris helped lead schools through traumatic loss of a student or a staff member. Jeannette was unafraid to walk onto that sacred ground and be a listening support. Jeannette’s voice and guitar will be sadly missed at church, at family weddings, funerals, however asked. Her singing of “Gethsemane” on Holy Thursday will remain in the parishioners’ memory. When they didn’t yet know her name, they sometimes would call her Gethsemane. But her talent as a comedian can’t be forgotten either. She could hold a room full of people in hysteria for two hours with a progression of jokes that she had acquired over the years. Many will remember her as the good friend who would do anything to help someone. She could be called at 11:00 pm to get her tools and come fix a toilet seat. Even when laid up with her recent traumatic leg break, she maintained relationships on the phone and was so humble about the dear friends who came to sit with her and help her when Chris needed to be out of the house. Besides having a special place in Chris’ family over these many years, from Chris’ mom, Anna, to siblings, to nieces and nephews, and great nephews and nieces, her beloved surviving family of origin should be named as follows: sisters Francesca (Dr. John Clark) of Seneca Falls, NY and Nadine (Steven) Gordner of Waterloo, NY. Nieces and Nephews, John (Kerri) Clark of Cromwell, CT, Annjeannette (Henry) Clark Bugai of Durham, CT, Rebecca (Thomas) Cline of Canandaigua, NY, Stephanie Gordner of Waterloo, NY and Steven (Kori) Gordner of Clifton Springs, NY. Six great nieces and nephews; Henry, Joseph, Ariana, Madison, Johnny, and Zachary. Jeannette was devoted to her extended family and enjoyed connecting with aunts, uncles, cousins; in happy celebrations, and in the fun visits, as well as in the sad times. Relatives and friends are invited to Sullivan’s Funeral Home, 365 E. Franklin St. at Rt. 13, Horseheads, NY on Wednesday, June 24, 2020 from 2-5PM. As all are welcomed, we will be adhering to NYS regulations for social distancing. Funeral Services will be held at 5pm with Fr. Christopher Linsler. In Jeannette’s memory, donations may be made to The Wounded Healers’ Bereavement Support Group, Inc. or to The Sisters of St. Joseph of Rochester, 150 French Rd. Rochester, NY, 14618.
