Jimme Lowe

Jimmy T. Lowe was born October 31, 1931 in Hickory Valley, Tennessee, he was the second child of the late George Lowe Sr. and Mae Ossie Brown. As a child, because of his red hair and reddish complexion, he was affectionately given the nickname “Redd”. Redd attended school in Hickory Valley and Prospect Baptist Church, in Grand Junction, Tennessee. Redd was known as a faithful and hard worker; as a child he assisted his parents, grandmother, and aunts with field work and chores around the farm. When he became a young teenager; he would often beg his grandmother to let him drive her car to hang out with his friends on Saturday nights. He was also known as a “sharp dresser”; he took pride in matching his clothing and would shine his shoes until he could see his face. In the late 1950’s, he migrated to New York City to live with his older brother; in search of a better life. It was in New York City, he discovered his passion to work in construction. For over 50 years, Redd built houses, repaired sidewalks and steps, and created patios, throughout the boroughs of New York City. In his retirement he became an Uber driver and personally selected his passengers. Redd was known as a loving father and helpful to family members young and old. One of his eldest sons- Jeffrey Larkin preceded his death. Redd enjoyed hunting wild turkeys and fishing for porgies and often shared his “lot” with others. In 1963, Redd met his long- time companion, the late Alberta Harvey and together they had two children Michael and Gregory. Redd is affectionately remembered by Michael and Gregory’s five elder siblings- Rock, Sheila, Derek, Glenda, and Allyson.
