Ned E. Jarvis Obituary

Ned E. Jarvis, 92, of Auburn, died Sunday, March 3, 2013, at Matthew House. Mr. Jarvis was born in Burlington, Iowa, to Roy C. and Mary Smith Jarvis. He spent most of his life in the Niles, Moravia and Auburn areas. He attended school in Moravia and Groton. He was a musician and guitarist with the Paul Rowe Orchestra, pre WW II. He was an Army veteran of WW II, serving in the European Theater. He landed in Normandy on D Day, and took part in the five major European campaigns, including the Battle of the Bulge. He received a Bronze Star for each, a Bronze Arrowhead for D Day, and a unit citation from the French Government. Mr. Jarvis was a former employee of Welch Allyn, where he was the model shop foreman, retiring after 28 years. He previously worked for Auburn Button Works, Sylvania, and Smith Corona. He owned and operated Jarvis Signs, doing all types of signs and lettering. He was an editorial cartoonist with the Post Standard during the 1950's, and a contributing cartoonist to Conover Nast, McGraw Hill, Penton Publishing, and other machinist trade magazines. His column "Just between Us" appeared as a regular feature along with his cartoons in the Citizen during the 80's and 90's. He was an avid golfer, and a member of the Meadowbrook Golf Club. He managed their senior league for several years. He was a member of the Swietoniowski-Kopeczek Post, American Legion. He is survived by his daughters, Barbara "Bunny" and James Reno of Walworth, Elizabeth "Betsy" and Anthony LoPiccolo, and Margaret "Penny" and Joseph Goodsell, and his sons, John and Cindy Jarvis and James and Maureen Jarvis, all of Auburn. Also surviving are three brothers Howard of Auburn, Raymond of New Woodstock, and Lewis Jarvis of Florida, 14 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Helen Piorun Jarvis, a grandson Steven LoPiccolo, his brother Charles Jarvis, and sisters Flora Jarvis, Ethel Fuller and Lucy Andrews. Funeral services for Mr. Jarvis will be at 9:30 A.M. Thursday, from the Plis Funeral Home, and a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 A.M. in St. Hyacinth's Church. Burial will be next to his beloved wife Helen in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
