Stephen (Steve) L. Melnick, 89, of Meridian, NY, cherished husband of Olga Harkovecz Melnick for 63 years, passed away Sunday, September 21, 2014, at home. Born in Syracuse, NY, he was the son of the late Trifon and Anna Romanuk Melnick. He moved to Meridian in 1933, and was a 1943 graduate of Cato-Meridian High School. He worked for General Motors and later the Nestle Company in Fulton as shipping foremen until his retirement in 1988. He also farmed and at different times operated a dairy, raised beef cattle, heifers, turkeys and crops of wheat, oats corn and hay. During the 1970's he helped lead scouting trips to the Adirondacks and Canada. He enjoyed bowling, farming, gardening, traveling, making pierogi's at his church and spending time with family. He served many years as a trustee for the village of Meridian and as mayor from 1982 to 1991. He was a member and officer of the Fellowship of Orthodox Christians in America, and a long time member of the Cayuga County Farm Bureau. In addition to his loving wife Olga, he is survived by his children Nancy (James) Perfield of Cato, Stephen (Patricia) Melnick of Latham, NY, Paula (Michael) Tucker of Cato, and John (Laurie) Melnick of Narragansett, RI. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren James (Kelly) Perfield of Indianapolis, IN, Anne (Jeffrey) McDonough of Cambridge, MA, Laura Perfield of Auburn, Stefan Melnick of Kingston, NY, Jessica Melnick of Astoria, NY, Kevin Melnick of Latham, NY, Stephen Tucker of Solvay, NY, Christopher Tucker of Pasadena, CA, Matthew Tucker of Cato, Mollie and Adam Melnick of Narragansett, RI, two great grandchildren, Madeline and Maxwell McDonough of Cambridge, MA, and his sisters Mary Melnick of Baldwinsville, NY and Olga Demetriades of Wyomissing, PA. He was predeceased by his brother George Melnick and sister Barbara Gonsa. Funeral services for Melnick will be 9:30 A.M. Thursday, September 25, from the Plis Funeral Home, and 10 A.M. in St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, Auburn. Burial will be in St. Peter & Paul Orthodox Catholic Cemetery, Syracuse. Friends are invited to call Wednesday from 4 to 7 P.M. at the funeral home, 220 State St., Auburn. Parastas services will be at 6:30 Wednesday evening.
