Virgil Alred Obituary

MASSENA – Mr. Virgil L. Alred, 78, of 117 Beach Street, passed away Saturday morning, March 9, 2013 at his home. Virgil was born October 17, 1934 in Arthurs, Tennessee the son of the late Harding and Nell Thorton Alred. He graduated from high school in Everett, Kentucky in 1953. On July 24, 1956, he entered the US Army where he served until being honorably discharged on July 23, 1959. On September 1, 1957, Virgil married Mary Lynn Prosper Hartman at the First United Methodist Church in Massena with Rev. Robert U. Holmes, officiating. Mary Lynn predeceased him on June 16, 2010. After his discharge from the Army, he went to work for a short time at General Motors. He later went to work at Reynolds Metals, where he became the supervisor in the cast house. Virgil retired in 1993 after 32 years of service. He also painted and tended bar on the side for many years. He was an active member of the Gerald R. Roy Amvets Post #4, Massena, where he enjoyed morning coffee with his buddies and afternoons with the guys at the Massena Moose Lodge #1110 of which he was a member. He also enjoyed lunches with his Reynolds Retirees Group. Virgil also enjoyed bowling, shooting pool, camping, and traveling. Virgil is survived by his children, David Alred of Massena; Jennifer Alred Bunnell of Massena; Richard Alred of New Jersey; Karen and Marty Mossow of Massena; and Jeffrey Alred of Charlotte, North Carolina; his four grandchildren, Jesse Bunnell, Christian Mossow; Danielle Alred; and Elijah Davis; his sisters, Lois Hayes of Soddy Daisy, TN and Genette Ellis of West Chester, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his four brothers, Eugene, Ray, Kyle, and John Alred. Friends may call Monday 7-9 PM and Tuesday 1-3 PM at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM. The members of the AMVETS will conduct memorial rituals at 7:15 Monday and the member of the Moose Lodge will meet at 7:30 for their memorial ritual. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the Massena Moose Lodge #1110, 4 Ames Street, Massena, NY 13662 to sponsor a Little League Team in Virgil’s name.
