Obituary
Gertrude Mitchell, a long time resident of Frederic Fleming House, died on March 18, 2017 at Jewish Home and Hospital in Manhattan. Ms. Mitchell was born on October 15, 1933 in New York City. She graduated from Central Needle Trade High School in Manhattan and continued her education at City College for two years, where she studied physical therapy, psychology, and public speaking. Ms Mitchell was an accomplished seamstress, and worked at the Queen Mills Garment Factory and other garment factories for twenty years. She took pride in her work and her craft. Ms. Mitchell moved into Frederic Fleming House in 1991, and was one of its thirty two original residents. She will be remembered as an independent woman and strong self-advocate. She enjoyed walking around the neighborhood to explore, shop, and complete her chores. She had many friends at Fleming House, and enjoyed socializing during mealtimes and groups. She was a skilled artist, and created beautiful paintings that continue to brighten Fleming House walls. Ms. Mitchell was an integral part of the West Side Federation for Senior and supportive Housing community. Always soft-spoken and kind-hearted, she will be missed dearly by her friends, family and staff. She is survived by her two sons, Pastor Robert Marrero and Dr. David Mapp Jr., her nephew Joseph Williams, and a slew of nieces, nephews and cousins in St. Thomas.
