Helen Fischer January 3, 1929 – October 10, 2017 Helen Lackovich Fischer of Palisades, NY died peacefully in her residence at Dowling Gardens in Sparkill, NY on Tuesday October 10, 2017 at the age of 88. She is predeceased by her husband Donald Fischer, Sr. and is survived by her son, Donald Jr.(Phyllis) of Upper Nyack, NY, son Kenneth (Lisa) of Blauvelt, NY, and daughter, Lori Lichtig (Jeffery) of Valley Cottage, NY as well as 5 loving granddaughters: Elizabeth (Betsy), Kelly, Sarah, Alix and Katherine (Kate). Helen was born and schooled in Guttenburg, NJ. She was a female athlete born decades ahead of her time. As a child she developed a love of sports especially basketball and bowling and excelled in both. Later in life, Helen became an accomplished skier and tennis player. After raising her family, while in her 50s, Helen pursued a career as a professional tennis instructor and coach which she continued into her 70s. Helen was truly dedicated to teaching children at various Bergen County schools, clubs and communities. She was a perennial volunteer instructor at the US Open Tennis Arthur Ashe Kids Day and served as a role model to young athletes. Helen’s garden was her labor of love and she was an avid baker. Her annual Christmas cookies were a favorite to all. The Fischer family is grateful to her caregivers Ruby, Tina, Lorena and Mol as well as the entire staff at Dowling Gardens. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Dowling Gardens, PO Box 276, Sparkill, NY 10976. The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 12, 2917 from 4 PM to 7 PM at the Hannemann Funeral Home, Inc. in Nyack. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday at 10:30 AM at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Rockland Cemetery, Sparkill, NY.
