Margaret C. Brown Obituary

Margaret C. Brown passed away peacefully on March 17, 2021 at Montefiore-Nyack Hospital in Nyack, NY. She was a spirited 91 years of age. Born May 23, 1929, Margaret lived her entire life in Rockland County, NY. She received her primary education in the Nyack public school system and graduated from Nyack High School in 1947. During her senior year in High School, “Margie” did part time work at the law firm of Trachtenberg and Silberman—considered a bold move at the time for a young woman of color. Margaret then traveled south to attend South Carolina State College (University) where she made the Dean's List all four years and earned the distinction of graduating Summa Cum Laude with a degree in business. In 1951, Margaret returned to Nyack where her previous employer took another leap forward and awarded her full time employment as a legal secretary on their staff. It was a first for a black woman in such a position in Rockland County. Margaret was a powerful example for others to follow. Before graduating S.C. State Margaret was blessed to have found the two loves of her life — Thomas Brown (1929-2005), her husband of 53 years, and The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., which she pledged in 1948. Thomas and Margaret’s union produced two surviving children, Maureen of Nanuet, NY and Darryl of Dallas, TX. Other surviving immediate family members are daughter in-law, Jean Ann, grandchildren Sarah, Darryl Jr., Andrew, and great-granddaughter, Lena. Margaret was a member in good standing at the Pilgrim Baptist Church in Nyack, NY where she joined at a very young age. After a brief absence, Margaret reinstated her membership under the pastorate of Reverend Dr. Willie L. Hairston. She supported numerous church ministries and co-chaired one of the many successful Church Anniversary programs. Pastor Hairston presented Margaret with two awards for her faithful service in 2009 and 2014. Margaret loved to socialize with friends and family. If anyone was looking for laughter and good food they need look no further than the Brown home in Nanuet or her "home away from home" the Rockland Elks Lodge in Nyack, NY. Margaret was a devoted member of Rockland Temple #261 her entire adult life holding many prominent positions in Elkdom. Margaret was an extremely proud and loyal sister of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She truly loved her Red and White, and was dedicated to living a life of Sisterhood, Scholarship and Service. She also had a deep passion for the education of African-American youth as witnessed by her tireless committee work within the sorority and her continuous support of the Rockland Negro Scholarship Fund. A memorial service will be held for Margaret C. Brown in late spring as our nation continues to recover from the months of protective isolation due to the pandemic. Details will follow. In lieu of flowers, the Brown family requests that gifts be made to the Rockland County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. or The Rockland Negro Scholarship Fund, Inc. in memory of Margaret C. Brown Donations should be sent to: Rockland County Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (RCACDST) P.O. Box 720 Nanuet, N.Y. 10954 Rockland Negro Scholarship Fund, Inc. (RNSF) P.O.
