Marion Wanamaker Obituary

Marion Mildred Wanamaker of Nyack, New York, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2019, after her long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Marion was born on August 2, 1928, in Brooklyn, NY, the youngest of eight children of Kenneth Fallon and Mary Kubecheque. She spent the first three years of her life in a medical facility before being taken in by the Brown family in Brooklyn. She spent all of her childhood being raised by kind and loving foster parents as well as several years at the Lakeside Home in South Spring Valley, NY. Marion graduated from Congers High School in 1946. In 1947, she met “Smokey” at Beezer’s Diner in Nyack. On their first date, they watched the circus on Smokeys’ brother Dicks’ homemade TV set in his basement. They were married at the All Saints Episcopal Church in Valley Cottage, NY on January 29, 1949. Their marriage of over seventy years was filled with love and devotion as well as service to their community. She was employed at several jobs as a secretary, including Lederle Labs, Liberty Street School, and the Village of Upper Nyack. Marion was an artist, musician, and an athlete, but she is best known as an avid photographer, taking pictures for the Nyack Fire Department, Nyack sports teams, and church functions. Anywhere there was something going on, you would find Marion there with her camera. She had a large address book with quite possibly over three hundred names and addresses in it. Marion would lovingly create a Christmas card collage of her pictures every year and send out a beautiful handmade card to everybody she knew. Marion was very devoted to her church and loved singing in the choir, and was very involved in all aspects of the church, including their annual Christmas Pageant. For 57 years, the family enjoyed summer vacations at Mead’s Cottages in Marion’s beloved Brant Lake, New York, where they had many good friends and good times. Marion is survived by her husband, Everett, “Smokey”, her two children, Linda DeGraw (George), and Paul (Terri), as well as her two grandchildren, Erica Wanamaker-Liu (Xiduo) and Jenna Wanamaker, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Everett. Marion spent her last few years at the Tolstoy Nursing Home in Valley Cottage, where she was treated with love and dignity by all. Marion will be remembered for her always present smile, her love of people, and her unwavering devotion to “Smokey” and her family. Visitation will be at The Hannemann Funeral Home on Sunday, October 20, from 3 pm-7 pm. Funeral will be held at The First Reformed Church of Nyack, 18 South Broadway at 10 am on Monday, October 21. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The First Reformed Church of Nyack, Box 565, Nyack, NY, 10960, or the Alzheimer’s Association, 301 North Main Street, Suite 7, New City, NY, 10956.
