Thomas Mahoney Obituary

Thomas Francis Mahoney passed away peacefully at home on September 1, 2017 surrounded by loving family. He was born in Auburn, NY on September 17, 1921 to Mary Anastasia Shaw Mahoney and Thomas Edward Mahoney. He is predeceased by his parents, his sister, Eleanor Murtaugh, and his wife of 68 years, Susan Elizabeth O’Connell Mahoney, who died on June 1 of this year. He grew up in Wassaic, NY, where his father owned the general store and his mother taught in the school. After graduating from Amenia High School at 16, he attended The Taft School for a year before enrolling in Amherst College. He completed an accelerated senior year program, graduating early with others in his class in order to serve in World War II. At age 21, he entered Midshipman’s School at Columbia University and was commissioned as Ensign USNR in Riverside Church on June 16, 1943. He was sent to Pearl Harbor, serving as executive officer on the minesweeper USS Progress and later as Officer in Charge on the USS Cockatoo. After being honorably discharged at the end of the war with the rank of Lieutenant, Tom studied at the American institute of Banking and at Babson Institute of Business Administration. He began his career as a bank executive with Chase Manhattan Bank, and over the next 40+ years was a vice-president at Tappan Zee Bank, Franklin National Bank, and European American Bank. On April 30, 1949, Tom married Sue, the true love of his life, at Saint Mary’s Church in Poughkeepsie. They lived in New York City, Levittown, and Putnam Valley, where Tom served in the Putnam Valley Volunteer Fire Department and was on the Executive Board of the Community Council. In 1964, Tom and Sue moved to Nyack where they lived for 32 years. Tom served the village and the community with dedication. He was a member of Saint Ann’s Parish Council and volunteered for many parish committees and functions; he served a term as Treasurer and a trustee of Rockland Country Day School, and was a trustee of the Rockland Foundation. He was a member of Nyack’s Zoning Board, the Citizen’s Advisory Board on Urban Renewal, chaired the Citizens for Better Education, served several terms as a village trustee, and two years as Treasurer. After retiring, Tom moved with Sue to Airmont, where they enjoyed 22 years together—keeping an eye on the neighborhood, providing an unofficial wildlife sanctuary, dining at the Waterwheel, making the daily trip to the post office and the deli, and attending Mass each Sunday at Sacred Heart Church. Tom was a devoted father to his children Nancy, Kathy, Maureen, Tom, Dan, Ellen (predeceased) Kevin, and Megan; father-in-law to Todd, Bruce, Sharon, Kris, Betty, and Arthur; Papa to Susan, Patrick, Jeffrey, Katie, Kristin, Keith, Scott, James, Brendan, Shannon, Tommy, Daniel, Brendan, Caitlin, Matthew (predeceased), Christopher, Bridget, Michael, Mary, Megan, and Madison (predeceased ) as well as 21 great-grandchildren (with one more on the way!) Tom is also survived by his cousins, Ginger Sweeney and Lee Shaw, his sister-in-law Peg O’Connell, and many nieces and nephews. Friends may visit at Hannemann Funeral Home on Thursday September 7 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial: Friday September 8, 10:00 a.m. Saint Ann’s Church Nyack, NY.
