Walter Lawrence Paden Obituary

Walter Lawrence Paden Jr of Cortlandt Manor, NY peacefully passed away Thursday, April 11, 2019. He was born on March 23, 1927 in Carmel NY, the second son of Walter Lawrence Paden Sr and Clara Lydia(Turene) Paden and was raised with his four brothers in Baldwin Place, NY. He attended and graduated from Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy. His graduating class of 1948 was the first graduating class at Kings Point to be awarded a bachelor's degree. After a brief career of sailing merchant ships all over the world and meeting his future bride, Nancy, he quit sailing and started his 19 year career working for the world's most successful naval engineering firms in the world - Gibbs and Cox. His first major assignment was to inspect the final stages of the building of the SS United States. The SS United States was a joint project with the US Government to build the fastest ocean liner that could also be converted to a rapid troop carrier. In July 1952, our father sailed on the SS United States record breaking maiden voyage setting trans-Atlantic speed records back and forth to Europe. In 1970, he ended his tenure(massive downsizing) with Gibbs and Cox. He started, owned and operated the tool and equipment rental store - Paden Rental until his retirement in 1990. Mr. Paden was a member of the Peekskill Presbyterian Church, National Maritime Historical Society(The Charles Point Council Steering Committee) and the Gene DeLong-Hudson Valley Chapter American Merchant Marine Veterans of WWII. He was a Cortlandt Little League manager and a Boy Scout Leader for Troop 36. He was predeceased by Nancy Adams Paden, his wife of 53 years and his brother and his wife Donald and Bruna Paden. He is survived by his three children: Jayme Fritzges(Bruce), Barry Paden(Cheryl), Sally Scubelek(Raymond), his nine grandchildren, Maggie Fritzges, Kevin Fritzges, Carley Paden, Lindsay Gentile(TJ), Chelsea Paden, Melissa Scubelek, Sean Scubelek(Lauren), Emily Scubelek, Patrick Scubelek and his two great grandchildren Hailey Gentile and Anthony James Gentile III. He is also survived by his three brothers Gerald Paden(Audrey, Charles Paden(Maureen) and Richard Paden(Marcia) and his brother in law Robert Adams(Doris) and their respective children and grandchildren. The family will receive friends at the Curry & Giordano Funeral Home on Friday, April 19, 2019 from 2 - 4pm and 7 - 9pm. The funeral service will be at the Peekskill Presbyterian Church on April 20th at 12:30. Interment to follow at Hillside Cemetery, Oregon Rd, Cortlandt Manor, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Peekskill Presbyterian Church, 705 South St., Peekskill, NY.
