Emma N. Remington Obituary
Emma Nora Remington, 88, of George Street, Parishville, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2016, surrounded by her family, at her son Troy’s residence in Lisbon.
Emma was born December 1, 1928, in her grandmother’s home on the Sylvan Falls Road in Parishville, the daughter of David Lyle Fountain and Eva Belle (Magill) Fountain. She attended the Crane District one-room schoolhouse, and graduated in 1946 from Parishville-Hopkinton Central School. Emma was married to her beloved husband, Warren Boyd Remington, on December 1, 1948.
Emma worked as a stock unit control clerk for Montgomery Wards in Potsdam, and also at the Peoples Bank and Trust in Potsdam. Warren and she owned and operated Remington’s Mobil in Parishville, from 1968 until 1981, where they retailed gasoline and conducted vehicle repairs, and sold and repaired snowmobiles and lawn tractors.
Emma was an active member of the Parishville community, and served as the Town Historian and Museum Curator, beginning in 1978 until her retirement in 2014. She was also the Town Librarian from 1986 to 2006. As the Parishville Town Historian, Emma authored nearly 400 genealogies of Parishville ancestors, and 45 books related to local landmarks, events, structures, and citizens. Emma and Warren made sure that all veterans buried in local cemeteries without a headstone received a memorial stone, and personally placed flags on all of the veterans’ graves annually. Emma was honored at the 2014 Parishville Bicentennial celebration for her years as Town Historian, which was a very proud moment for her and her family.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Parishville, Parishville Historical Society, the Nihanwate Chapter of the DAR in Potsdam (serving 8 years as Chaplin), and the Hillcrest Cemetery Association, of which she was also a trustee for many years. Emma enjoyed reading, cooking and baking, canning, genealogy and local history, and spending time with her family and many friends.
Emma was predeceased by her loving husband, Warren, on August 22, 1997, her parents, and her sister, Lila Vanderburg. She is survived by two sons, Terry (Marijean) Remington, St. Regis Falls, and Troy (Dianna) Remington, Lisbon; four grandchildren, Zachary (Rebecca) Remington, Queensbury, Kristen (Ryan) Armstrong, Morristown, Abigail Remington and fiancé Andrew Gang, Parishville, and Lindsey Remington and companion Devin Larson, Clifton Park; and six great grandchildren, Lincoln Remington; Reid, Jacob, and Fletcher Armstrong; and Alexandra and Andrew Gang.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 17th at 10:00 AM at the Donaldson-Seymour Funeral Home, Potsdam, with Reverend Lee Sweeney officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, December 16th from 2:00 to 4:00 or 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the Parishville Rescue Squad or the Parishville Historical Society.
