Elayne Z. Weinstein

Elayne Zoe Levy Weinstein passed away Monday January 21, just three days before her 88th birthday, after courageously fighting a long battle with her health nemeses. While those who saw her never could imagine what she was enduring (until she told them) she always looked the picture of health and was always dressed impeccably, replete with amazing earrings and other unique jewelry.

Elayne was predeceased by her loving and devoted husband Monroe Mayer. She leaves behind three daughters Riva (Larry Illges), Lesleigh (Daniel Wise), Pam Schwartz (Moty Schwartz) and two loving grandchildren Dor Schwartz and Amit Schwartz (Ithai Ohana).

Elayne had an amazing life, traveling the globe, being an amateur archeologist, an avid horseback rider as well as being a huge reading enthusiast and always keeping up on and being involved in all that was going on around her. When her children were young, she worked in Monroe’s dental office, worked tirelessly as a President of the League of Women Voters, and helping people in any way she was able. She was extremely involved in Temple Beth El from the day she arrived in Poughkeepsie up until recently.

In her later years, she volunteered reading to children, attended numerous book clubs, and enjoyed Brain Games at the Boardman library. Elayne was an voracious reader and crossword puzzle player. She was a patron of the arts and all things Jewish. Her identity was very important to her.

Elayne was a very outspoken and passionate person in everything that she said and did. She was opinionated and to the point. In that vein, she made it clear, in her last days, that she wanted people to find what it was about her that they remembered and hold that memory in their hearts. Her wishes were that each one that she touched kept that part of her in their hearts and minds.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to, the Boardman Road Library, Hudson Valley Hospice, Meals on Wheels, the Hudson Valley Food Bank, or any social welfare charity of your choice.

Funeral services will be at Temple Beth El, Grand Ave, Poughkeepsie NY at on her birthday January 24th at 11 am with burial at Temple Beth El Cemetery following
