Obituary for Vivian Fern Petrone

Rensselaer- Vivian Fern Petrone, age 89, passed away suddenly on December 5, 2012 surrounded by her loving family. She was the daughter of the late James and Anna Bittle Scott.

On December 7, 1941 she married Alexander Petrone. They were to celebrate 71 years of marriage. Vivian especially enjoyed and loved all children and was a caring and loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She is survived by four children, her daughter Judith (Robert) Larkin, and her three sons, Ralph (Pat), Gary (Stephanie) and Wesley (Pat) Petrone and ten grandchildren-Debra Larkin, Matthew Larkin (Kelly), Jay Petrone(Amy), Chris Petrone, Melanie Teliska(Mark), Sarah Martino (David), Wes Jr., Craig(Alexa) and Derrick (Terri) Petrone, Erica Fisher(Nathan). She was predeacesed by her granddaughter Amy Petrone Donohue, great-granddaughter Francesca A. Petrone and her eight siblings Wesley, William, Raymond, Kenneth, Russell, Robert, Betty and Helene. She is also survived by 13 great-grand children and many nieces and nephews.

Vivian was a professional musician and entertainer, music teacher and artist. She was a church organist, pianist and choir director for over 70 years and was a member of the Organist Guild. Vivian played professionally in area restaurants and other venues. In addition, she played the violin, sax and accordion for many organizations and brought much joy to many in all her music. Before and after becoming a senior citizen herself, she played piano for the Rensselaer Senior Citizens, Jewish Community Center, the Melody Maker Dance Band of Troy and many nursing homes. She sang a perfect Edith and Archie Bunker theme song-“Those were the days”. When in the Albany Senior Citizen’s Orchestra, she played violin and joined a four-octave bell ringer group. While in her 50’s she learned to play the saxophone and then, joined and marched in the East Greenbush Community Band.

She loved opera music, was a Girl Scout Leader, avid swimmer and First Aid Life Guard and was a home health aid. She enjoyed oil painting and taught ceramic painting. The family gives special thanks to the Van Rensselaer Manor Nursing Home staff for their devoted care to Vivian (aka Maxine), one of their most colorful residents. She was a beloved nanny to numerous families.

Funeral from the W. J. Lyons Jr. Funeral Home 1700 Washington Avenue Rensselaer Tuesday morning at 10:00 the Rev. R. Adam Forno presiding. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Monday from 4-8 PM. Interment in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery East Greenbush.

In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Ronald McDonald House, 139 So. Lake Avenue Albany, NY 12208 in the name of Amy Petrone Donohue, the Rensselaer Senior Center, 50 Herrick Street Rensselaer, NY 12144 and the Rensselaer Jr./Sr. High School, 25 Van Rensselaer Dr., Rensselaer, NY 12144 for children in need of assistance for musical instruments.
