Obituary:A. Buol Hinman, 86, of Rome, passed away Sunday, December 12, 2010, in University Hospital in Syracuse after a long illness. He was born February 12, 1924, in Warren, OH, the son of Hazen B. and Katherine Buol Hinman, Sr. Buol was the President of the Class of 1942 at Rome Free Academy and the Class of1946 at Dartmouth College. He was also a graduate of the Amos Tuck Graduate School of Business at Dartmouth College, Class of 1949. On July 7, 1950, Buol married Joan Miller in Zion Episcopal Church in Rome.

Buol took over as President of Rome Strip Steel in 1964 after the death of his father and retired as Chairman in 1994.

Mr. Hinman proudly served his country in the US Army during World War II with the 82nd Combat Engineer Battalion in Texas, Africa and Europe. For his service he was awarded a Purple Heart and four Battle Stars.

Buol was very active in the local community and was a member of Teugega Country Club, the Lake Delta Yacht Club, Venice, FL Yacht Club, American Order of the French Croix Des Guegrre, and he was and Elder and past Trustee at the First Presbyterian Church of Rome.

He was formerly on the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army and Liberty Mutual Insurance of Central New York, and was also a former Director or Trustee of the Rome Historical Society, Rome Chamber of Commerce, Oneida County Savings Bank, Iroquois Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Rome Cemetery Association, and the American Iron and Steel Institute.
Buol was a former President of the Industrial Association of Mohawk Valley and the Association of Cold Rolled Strip Steel Producers. He was also a former Chairman of Bartell Machinery and Dove Photonics.

Surviving besides his loving wife of 60 years, Joan, is a daughter, Sally Hinman, of Rome; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kirk and Linda Hinman, of Rome, and Mark and Catherine Hinman, of Rome; a brother and sister-in-law, Hazen and Isabelle Hinman, Jr., of Switzerland; seven grandchildren, Kristen (Tim) Embree, of Washington, DC, Allison (Nate) Smith, of Boston, MA, Jocelyn Hinman, of Rome, Katherine (Ted) Lansdale, of Natick, MA, Nichole (Stephen) Huntzinger, of Rome, Jamie Hinman, of Rome , and Hazen Drew Hinman, of Rome; and a great-grandson, Charles Lansdale; a niece, Jennifer Cofield, of Rome, and two nephews, Jeff Hinman, of Enfield, NH, and David Hinman, of Rome. He was predeceased by a sister-in-law, Nancy W. Hinman.

Services: Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11am at the First Presbyterian Church of Rome. Interment will take place in Rome Cemetery. Friends may call at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, on Thursday from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Contributions in Buol's memory may be made to the Salvation Army of Rome or the First Presbyterian Church of Rome Memorial Fund.
