Obituary:Alfred E. Cresson, 80, of Taberg, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at his residence with his family by his side after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was born November 9, 1928 in Newburg Township, IL, the son of Robert and Alfreda Tucker Cresson. He was a graduate of Griggsville (IL) High School. On August 1, 1953, he married Nancy Duell in Taberg Methodist Church.
Al served as the Deputy Director for the Oneida County Veteran’s Affairs Office for several years. He previously served his country in US Air Force for twenty years, retiring in 1969.
Mr. Cresson was a Life Member and Past Commander of the Meeker-O’Rourke American Legion in Taberg. He was Past Oneida County Commander for the American Legion. Al was also a Life Member of the Taberg Volunteer Fire Department and a Life Member of the Rome VFW.
Al was an avid golfer and was a member of Rome Country Club. He was a member of the Rome Independent Golf League (recently renamed in his honor) and the Oneida County American Legion Golf League. He also enjoyed playing pitch, hunting and fishing.
Surviving besides his wife, Nancy, are three daughters and sons-in-law, Caramel and Nelson Secor, of Taberg, Donna and David Wheat, of Taberg, and Nancy and Eric LaRoche, of Cheshire, MA; a sister and brother-in-law, Ruby and Ray Mink, of Pittsfield, IL; six grandchildren, Suzanna, Christopher, Andrea, Allison, Dylan and Cody; and seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sisters, Charlotte Simmons and Margaret Waite, and three brothers, Art, Robert and Philiar.
Al’s family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Paolozzi and his staff at the Syracuse VA Hospital Hematology and Oncology Clinic, Colleen and the nursing staff on the 4th Floor Infusion, the entire staff at the Griffiss VA Outreach Clinic, the VA Home Care staff, Hospice and Palliative Care, his golfing buddies, and Karen Burlingame, for all the kindness and compassion shown to Al during his illness.
Services: Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10am at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 9464 State Rt. 13, Camden. Interment will take place in Maple Hill Cemetery, Taberg. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4-7pm. Contributions in Al’s memory maybe made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice and Palliative Care.
