Obituary for Anastasia N. Swistak

Anastasia N. “Nellie” Swistak, 95, of Rome, passed away on Thursday, October 1, 2015 at Betsy Ross Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born August 16, 1920 in Ludlow, PA, the daughter of Michael and Anna Kowal Matvias. She was a member of the 1939 graduating class of Rome Free Academy. On October 7, 1944 she married John Swistak, Sr. in Transfiguration Church. He passed away on July 28, 1969.
Nellie worked at Griffiss Air Force Base before transferring to McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento, CA and retired there in 1977.
Mrs. Swistak is survived by a daughter, Joanne Hedrick of Concord, CA; a son and daughter-in-law, John Jr. and Elizabeth Swistak of Rome; two brothers, Fred Matvias of Bradford, PA, and Myron Matwejic of Lakeland, FL; two grandchildren, James (Melissa) Swistak and Jason Swistak; three great-grandchildren, Ashlynn, Zachary and Sebastian; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, David Swistak; two sisters, Veronica Witt and Mary Zuk; and two brothers, Walter and Paul Matwejic.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10:15am at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Transfiguration Church at 11:00am. Interment will take place St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Taberg. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Transfiguration Church Memorial Fund.
