Obituary: Dorothea T.”Dotty” Reader, 81, of Floyd Ave., formerly of 516 River Rd. Rome, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 9, 2009. She was born on July 1, 1927, in Auburn, NY, the daughter of Harry and Teresa Flanders Carrigan. She was a graduate of Union Springs High School. On February 26, 1955, she was united in marriage to Morris H. Reader, Sr., in McConnellsville, NY. Mr. Reader passed away on June 27, 1976.
Mrs. Reader was a therapy aide for the Rome D.D.S.O. for several years, retiring in 1982.
Dorothea was a member of St. Peter’s Church, the auxiliary of the Rome Moose Lodge and past Vice President of the Women’s Republican Club.
Dotty was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and was a devoted lifelong Yankee Fan.
Surviving are five daughters and four sons-in-law, Eleanor “Lenni” Beer, of Rome, Morrene and Dale Hewitt, of Staunton, VA; Doris and John Franklin, of Bossier City, LA; Diane and Randy Come, of Lee Center; and Ann and Dave Owens, of Columbia, MD; a son, Morris Reader, Jr., of Floyd; a sister Geraldine Vreeland, of Union Springs; a brother, Edward Carrigan, of Miami, FL; grandchildren, Mark (Elin) Beer and Robert Beer, Rome; David Hewitt and Renee’ (Randy) Monger of Staunton, VA; Jason and Matthew Reader, Rome, and Ryan Reader, USMC, CA.; James Griffith and Teresa Everhart, Bossier City, LA.; Randy Jr., (Amanda) Come, Taberg, Erin (Jason) Williamson, Floyd and Sara Come, Lee Center; T.J. and Scott Roush, Columbia, MD; great-grandchildren, Laina, Cassidy, Kahlan , Ayden, several nieces, and nephews, and a dear friend and roommate Helen Jones with whom she enjoyed many Yankee games together. She was predeceased by her husband, Morris Sr., brothers, John and Harry Carrigan, sister, Mary Gunderson and grandson, Nicholas Roush.
Dotty’s family wishes to express a special thank you to the staff at Rome Nursing Home for their thoughtful care and friendship during the past year.
Services: Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, at 8:45 AM and a Mass of the Christian Burial at St. Peter’s Church at 9:30 AM where the Rev. Philip A. Hearn will officiate. Interment will take place in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
