Obituary: Joanne “Joan“ Barbara Rees, passed away peacefully into the arms of her Lord on May 2, 2011, at the Betsy Ross Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Rome, NY.
Joan was born in Rome, NY, on April 21, 1929, a daughter of William J. and Cornelia Ellinger Rees.
Joan was a communicant of St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, Rome, NY, participating in their Legion of Mary, the Altar and Rosary Society and the Senior Group. She attended The Academy of the Holy Names, Rome, NY. Joan was a devoted volunteer for countless years serving charities both local and national. She was a member of the Ava Dorfman Senior Center and the ARC Evening Recreation Group.
Her zest for life was evident each day as she pursued her interests in crafting, gardening, bowling, bicycling, traveling, and cooking. Vacations, day trips, picnics, and holiday celebrations with her mom, dad, family, and friends were very happy times for Joan. Family members have often said that when Joan shared these fond recollections, they were reminded of how fortunate they were to have been part of this loving family.
Joan is survived by a beloved sister and brother, Dorothea “Dot” Rees Currie, of East Orleans, MA, and Robert and his wife, Eleanor Rees, of Loveland, CO; devoted sisters-in-law, Roseann Rees, of Naples, FL, and Old Forge, NY, and Eleanor Rees, of Universal City, TX; adoring nieces and nephews, John E. Rees, Jr., Thomas “Tim” Rees, Jr., Daniel Currie, Mary Ellen Rees Filippini, Charles “Chick” Rees, Kathleen Rees Piatek, Prudence “Prudy” Rees Coonan, Richard Currie, Cornelia “Dee” Rees, Arthur “Brer” Rees, James Rees, Eleanor “Onnie” Rees Saathoff, John Currie, Robert “Skip” Rees, Peter Rees, Gary Rees, Ronald Rees; and numerous cousins, great nieces, and great nephews.
Joan leaves dear friends, Barbara Guelfi Barber and her family, who for many years assisted and guided Joan on her journey in life. Barb and her family did this with understanding, devotion, patience, and an abundance of love. Joan also leaves friends, Sandy Bloss and Rose Mattia.
Rev. Msgr. Francis J. Culkin, Rev. Philip A. Hearn, Sr. de Paul Juliano and Sr. Rosaire Anne DeMare, were trusted confidants who provided spiritual care and comfort throughout Joan’s adult life and during her recent illnesses.
Joan is preceded in death by her loving parents, William and Cornelia; grandparents, George and Pauline Schneible Ellinger and Adolph and Mary Ulrich Rees; brothers, Lt. William G. Rees, Major John E. “Ned” Rees, Arthur F. Rees, Thomas P. Rees; brother-in-law, Donald J. “Jim” Currie; sister-in-law, Sheila Dowd Rees; nephew, William S. “Billy” Rees; uncles and aunts, Frank and Etta Rees, Joseph and Emma Rees, George and Anna Mae Rees Spalt, Albert E. “Elmer” and Marie Ellinger, Pat and Margaret Ellinger Canino, and Henry and Georgianna Ellinger Kauth.
Joan’s family wishes to express their gratitude to Barb Barber, Debbie Evans, the staff at Betsy Ross Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, the staff of Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., and the physicians, nurses, and staff at Rome Memorial Hospital for their compassionate care.

Services: A Memorial Mass of the Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 2, 2011, at 11:00 AM at St. Peter’s Church, 200 N. James St., Rome, with the Rev. Philip A. Hearn officiating. A private graveside service was held in St. Peter’s Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
