Obituary for John Stuart Gerow

John Stuart Gerow, 61, of Rome, died Thursday, December 11, 2014 after a long heroic struggle with cancer. He was born May 13, 1953 in Rome, the son of Stuart and Erma Bormann Gerow. He was a graduate of Camden Central High School. Upon graduation, he volunteered for the draft and became a US Army Medic with the Green Beret’s. John was awarded medical disability due to injuries suffered in Vietnam and was honorably discharged.
He was a member of one of the first graduating classes of SUNY IT and later earned a Doctorate in General Medicine from Universidad del Noreste in Tampico, Mexico. While studying in Mexico, he was a medical first responder on the scene after the disastrous earthquake in Mexico City.
John was a master jewelry craftsman and attended craft shows throughout the eastern United States.
Mr. Gerow was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and the National Rifle Association. He was also a member of the local Masonic Order and had enjoyed fellowship with the friends of Bill W. for the last 39 years.
John is survived by: his wife, Patricia Langendorf Gerow, of Rome; his mother, Erma Gerow, of Rome; a sister, Erma Marie Gaspa, of Utica; two brothers, Don (Laura) Gerow, of Orlando, FL, and Fred Gerow, of Taberg; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father and a sister, Yvonne Barrett.
John’s family would like to thank everyone who has helped them through this difficult time, especially Adam Bunal.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 6pm at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome. Friends may call at the funeral home prior to the service on Wednesday from 4-6pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions in John’s memory may be made to the Rescue Mission of Rome.
