Obituary: John Platis, 83, of Rome, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, April 28, 2009.
He was born October 15, 1925 in Vermillion County, Indiana.
John served in the United States Navy, followed by a long career in the United States Air Force; he was a twenty-year veteran of the United States military serving during World War II, Korean War and the Vietnam Era.
After returning from military service, he worked for the United States Postal Service for twenty years, until his retirement in 1990.
John married the love of his life, the former Lorraine J. Schmitt at St. Mary’s Church, Rome.
He was the loving father of four children, a daughter Pamela and husband Paul Greenberg, of Troy, New York; son, John and wife Michele of Mansfield, Texas; son Stephen of Rome and son Richard and wife Danielle of Rome. John was the beloved grandfather, “bompa” to three cherished granddaughters, Alexa Platis, Abigail Greenberg and Caitlin Platis; they were the light of his life, and a sister, Mary F. Green, Shelbyville, Indiana. John was predeceased by a sister, Mary Balmos of San Antonio.

Services: Funeral will be held Saturday 10:45 A.M. from the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George Street, Rome and 11:30 A.M. where a mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Paul’s Church. Interment St. Mary’s Cemetery
Friends may call at the funeral home Friday 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.
