Obituary:Professor Joseph Edward Riley, 79, of Rome passed away on April 9, 2012. He was born on August 9, 1932, the son of William and Bridget Cunningham Riley in Utica. He was a graduate of Sacred Heart School, Whitesboro Central High School, SUNY at Buffalo and held graduate degrees from SUNY Cortland, Syracuse University and New York University. Joe was a Professor Emeritus at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica and Rome.
Professor Riley was an Air Force Combat Veteran of the Korean War, having flown 58 combat missions in B26 type aircraft. He was awarded three Distinguished Flying Crosses, five Air Medals, and three Conspicuous Service Crosses, all with Combat V for Valor.
He was an active Rotarian for 45 years and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of the Rome Rotary for the last 10 years. Joe was also a Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, VFW, and the Royal Canadian Legion. He also served for many years on the Salvation Army Advisory Board, St. Paul's Church Parish Council, and the Bishop's Council of the Syracuse Diocese.
Professor Riley is survived by the mother of his four daughters, Barbara Riley Brown and their children, Susan Riley, Bridget Riley, Melissa Riley Nazarenko, and Jennifer Riley; four grandchildren, Heather LaPorte, Thomas Joseph Wylie, Nicholas Nazarenko, and Alexander Riley Nazarenko; and four great-grandchildren, Jesse, Cody, Lauryn, and Emma; a brother, Frank Riley; as well as his church family, Ron and Moira Williamson, Mandy Rokicki, and many, many friends. He was predeceased by a sister, Maureen Riley, and brother, Frederick Riley.
Services: A Mass of the Christian Burial will take place on Friday, April 13, at St. Paul's Church at 11am, with the Rev. Joseph Sestito officiating. Interment will take place in Arlington National Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Contributions in Joe's memory may be made to the St. Paul's Church Memorial Fund.
