Obituary: Leo R. Aikens, Sr., 86, of Taberg, passed away on Friday, April 9, 2010, at Oneida Healthcare Extended Care Facility. He was born on September 18, 1923, in Lewis, NY, the son of Grant and Maude Redman Aikens. He attended schools in West Leyden. On February 27, 1947, Leo was united in marriage to Gladys Hoage.
He was employed by several area wire mills and was also a carpenter and painter.
Leo proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy serving in the Pacific Theatre during World War II
He was a fifty year member of the Meeker-O’Rourke American Legion Post #1309, in Taberg, and was a former Post Commander.
Surviving besides his loving wife of sixty-three years, Gladys; are five daughters and four sons-in-law, Joyce and Herb Simpson, of Blossvale, Trudi and Patrick Comins, of Perry, FL, Darlene Aikens, of Taberg, Sally and Dave Metott, of Williamstown, and Belinda and Mark Skellham, of NV; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert Aikens, of Taberg, Leo and Jackie Aikens, Jr., of Taberg, and David and Alisa Aikens, of Camden; a son-in-law, Doyle “Ed” Edwards, of Rome; two sisters, Dorothy Aikens, of OR, and Cindy and Lester Spink, of Rome; a brother and sister-in-law, Hugh and June Aikens, of Rome; forty grandchildren; sixty-three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Leo was predeceased by a daughter, Gloria Edwards; two brothers, Donald Aikens and Faye Aikens; and a sister, Audrey Hawkins.
Services: Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, at 7:00 PM where the Rev. Jeff Moore will officiate.
