Obituary: Louise H. Marturano, 93, of Rome, passed away on Friday, March 18, 2011, with her loving family at her side. She was born on September 12, 1917, in Rome, the daughter of Herbert and Mary Sharp Hitchings. She was a graduate of Rome Free Academy. On April 27, 1940, Louise was united in marriage to Joseph A. “Pete” Marturano in St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Rome. Mr. Marturano passed away on November 2, 1989.
In the early days, Louise worked as a clerk in the Triangle Shoe Store and later managed the Millinery Department at the Star Store. She and her husband, Pete, were the owners and operators of the Lovely Lady Beauty Salon, Rome, NY and the Lake Shore Hotel in Sylvan Beach, NY as well part owners of the Mohawk Lanes Bowling Alley.
Louise was a member of St. Mary’s and St. Peter’s Faith Communities and the Odd Girls Club.
She was an avid bowler and enjoyed Japenese (Bunka) embroidery and ceramics.
Surviving are a daughter, Sharon Bendtzen, of Rome; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Herbert Hitchings, of Florida, and John and Faith Hitchings of Sylvan Beach; two special nieces Marie Raack, and Barbara Dibble, both of Rome; two grandaughters, Megan Bendtzen, Marnie B. Davis and spouse, Tad Davis, and grandson Rob Bendtzen; and several nieces and nephews. Louise was predeceased by a son-in-law, Robert Bendtzen; two sisters, Irene Cronizer and Alzina “Shorty” Kinnetz; and five brothers, Cecil Parkhurst, Pete Hitchings, Thomas Hitchings, Richard Hitchings and Edson Hitchings.
Services: Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 21, 2011, at 12:15 PM at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, and a Mass of the Christian Burial at St. Mary of the Assumption Church at 1:00 PM where the Rev. Philip A. Hearn will officiate. Interment will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Family and friends are invited and may call on Sunday from 2:00 to 5:00 PM at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home.
