Obituary: Matilda J. “Mae” Zebko (Zdziebko), 91, of Turin St., Rome, went into the hands of the Lord on Saturday, May 9, 2009, at Rome Nursing Home following a long illness. She was born on March 2, 1918, in Lowville, NY, the daughter of Julian and Stella Lewandrowski. She was a graduate of Newport High School, Newport, NY. As a young woman, she attended hairdresser school in New York City. During World War II, she worked at Rome Cable Company. On August 31, 1941, Mae was united in marriage to Stanley Zebko in Rome. Mr. Zebko passed away in 1986.
Together with her husband, Mae co-owned and co-operated Riverside Bowling Lanes in Marcy for several years.
Mrs. Zebko was a member of Transfiguration of Our Lord Church and their Holy Rosary Society. She was also a member of the South Rome Senior Citizen Center and the Rome Polish Home.
Mae’s was a wonderful mother and grandmother. The love she showed towards her family was immeasurable. From repairing her grandchildren’s stuffed animals and dolls to making sure that you never left her home hungry, her family was her life. We will miss her Christmas Eve dinners which brought her whole family together at one beautiful table in her home.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Bernadette “Bonnie” Zdziebko, of Rome; a daughter-in-law, Lori Zdziebko, of Stittville; a sister, Lottie Chnowski, of Stamford, CT; a brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Clara Lewandrowski, of Marcy; five grandchildren, Matthew Zdziebko, Andrew Zdziebko, Deborah Zdziebko, Cynthia LaPoint, and Jennifer Zdziebko; four great-grandchildren, Alicia LaPoint, Stanley Zdziebko, Ayanna Zdziebko-Baty, and Andrew Zdziebko, II; and several nieces and nephews. Mae was predeceased by a son, Thomas Zdziebko, on December 13, 2007.
Matilda’s family would like to thank Rome Memorial Hospital, 2 North, and also the Rome Nursing Home nurses and staff for their great compassion and care during Matilda’s final days. Their kindness will never be forgotten.
Services: Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at 12:15 PM at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, and a Mass of the Christian Burial at 1:00 PM at Transfiguration of Our Lord Church where the Rev. Lucian Urbaniak will officiate. Interment will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Family and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM.
