Obituary for Richard Frederick Kahler

Native Roman Richard Frederick (Dick) Kahler died with dignity and grace Sunday, July 27, 2014 at the age of 88 after a brief illness.
He was born February 10, 1926, in the Nero family homestead. He was the only child of Frank and Filomena (Minnie) Nero Kahler. He graduated in 1943 from RFA and, after 11 years of night school, from Utica College of Syracuse University in 1971. Dick was employed by Rome Cable Corporation for 42 years in the Inspection, Engineering, and Sales departments
He married the former Joan E. Kimberly on September 18, 1954, in St. Mary's Church. They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary next Thursday.
Dick was a charter member of the Rome Chapter, Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America. At one time, he directed the local chorus and was a member of several quartets.
Dick was committed to Rotary International. He served as President of the local club and as Assistant Governor of District 7150 and was a Paul Harris Fellow. Until his illness, he was song leader for the club and was known as the "Voice of the Rotary" at the annual Canal Fest. He always lived the Rotary motto, "Service above self."
A student of military history, he facilitated classes in military aircraft for the Mohawk Valley Institute for Learning in Retirement (MVILR).
He was a life member of the Rome Historical Society and as President considered as his greatest achievement the purchase of the old Post Office for the Society's Museum. He was awarded the Society’s Medal of The Order of 1777 for his contribution to the city.
Before that, Dick was Campaign Chairman and President of the United Way. He was appointed to the Zoning Board of Appeals by Mayor Valentine and was also a member of the Griffiss Military Affairs Committee.
Dick was a charter member of the Lions Club, a member of the board of the Rome Club, a life member of the Elk's club and Knight of Columbus, where he volunteered at weekly bingo games. For many years he was a board member of the Fort Stanwix Council Boy Scouts of America. He also belonged to bowling and golf leagues and was a member of the Lake Delta Yacht Club.
He was a life member of St. Mary's and St. Peter's Churches where he served as a weekly usher for more than 50 years.
Surviving are his loving wife, Joan, beloved daughter, Dr. Kimberly Kahler Newton, (Dr. Ernest C. Edwards) of Syracuse, a sister-in-law, Kay Kimberly of Cicero, nieces, nephews and their families.
He was pre-deceased by his parents, his aunt Martha Nero who helped raise him, uncles John, Allie, Frederick, Roe, and Joseph Nero, sister-in-law, Nancy K. Sharron, brother-in-law William M. Kimberly, and former son-in-law Dr. Leonard J. Newton.
A memorial mass will be held at 10:30AM Saturday, September 13, 2014, at St. Mary's Church, 210 W. Liberty St. Rome.
