Obituary for Sheila A. Elmer

Sheila A. Elmer, 69, of Rome, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 25, 2015. She was born October 6, 1945 in Rome to the late Russell and Mabel Bingham. Sheila graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1963. On March 27, 1965, she was united in marriage to LaVerne Elmer.
Prior to her retirement, Sheila worked for Dr. Rashid in Rome, where she loved comforting the patients and bringing joy to those that needed it.
Sheila loved many things in life, such as God, America, and gardening, but above all else she had a passion for making people happy. From strangers, to friends, to family, she had a love for people and had a way of making everyone feel special. But the most important thing to her was spending time with her family, which brought her great joy.
Surviving besides her loving husband of 50 years, Vern, are three daughters and sons-in-law, Tammy and William Owen of Carrabelle, FL, Kristin and Jake Smith of Rome, and Tara and Robert Feathers of Castle Creek, NY; a son and daughter-in-law, Vern and Cora Elmer of Penn Valley, CA; nine grandchildren, Tanya Sciorilli, Dominick Sciorilli, Sarah (Caleb) Hansen, Sierra Elmer, Amanda Elmer, Brynn Smith, Brody Smith, Addison Feathers, and Brooke Feathers; two great-grandchildren, Brady and Marc-Elliot; four sisters and a brother-in-law, Gloria Hughes of Rome, Joy Bingham of Rome, June and Dean Austin of Rome, and Loretta Yager of Ohio; a brother and sister-in-law, Russell and Linda Bingham of Colorado; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Nicole Elmer; two sisters, Barbara Leszczynski and Nancy Jones; and three brothers-in-law, Donald Hughes, Leonard Yager, and Thomas Leszczynski.
Sheila’s family would like to thank the nurses and staff at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for their wonderful care and compassion.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00am at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc. 418 N. George St., Rome. Interment will take place in Evergreen Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 4:00pm to 7:00pm.
