Lewis Sharp

Wilmington, NC – Lewis “Lew” W. Sharp, Jr., 91, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 in Wilmington, NC. Born in Amsterdam, NY on December 5, 1926, he was the only child of the late Lewis Sr. and Lena Sharp. Lew grew up in Amsterdam, NY. He was active in the Boy Scouts growing up, eventually reaching the rank of Eagle Scout, their highest honor. Immediately after graduating high school, Lew joined the US Navy, serving proudly during WWII as a Naval Aviation Electronic Technician. Following returning home from service, Lew started a career at GE in Schenectady as a Pattern Maker. After 14 years there, he transferred to the Pittsfield GE where he worked as a Systems Designer until his retirement in 1988. When he transferred to the Pittsfield GE he and his family relocated to Stephentown, NY, where he resided until October of 2018. In his free time, and in retirement, Lew was active in many different groups. He was a 46 year member of the Stephentown Volunteer Fire Dept. He was a member of the Stephentown Veterans, a member of the Corvettes of the Berkshires, and a member of Masonic Welcome Lodge No. 829, F & AM. Lew also enjoyed many hobbies including cars (his two Corvettes), going to car shows, collecting model trains, coins, and stamps. He loved taking cruises all over the world. He especially enjoyed Hawaii. Lew is survived by his children; Michael P. Sharp of Bogata, Columbia, Gary A. (Margo) Sharp of Wilmington, NC (formerly Stephentown, NY), and Bonnie (Brian) Sheridan of Durham, NC, his grandchildren; Benjamin and Brendan Sheridan, Matthew (Emily) Sharp, Katharine Von Brook, Michael (Claudia), Andrew (Cathy), Lily (Jimmy) and Victoria Sharp, and step-granddaughter Jessica Bressette, and is survived by 8 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Leja Sharp. A visitation will be held Saturday, July 28, from 10 AM until 12 PM at Hall and Higgins Funeral Home, Stephentown. A service will follow at 12 PM. Interment will follow in Cemetery of the Evergreens. Memorial donations in Lew’s memory can be made to the Stephentown Volunteer Fire Dept, PO Box 208, Stephentown, NY 12168.
