Winifred Clayter Obituary

Winifred Evelyn Clayter made her initial mark in this world on November 28, 1918. She was born in Holyoke, MA, to Howard Morgan and Maude (Jackson) Morgan. She attended schools in the Hillburn/Suffern area, including the segregated Brook School, and in 1935, was the first African-American student to graduate from Monticello High School. In 1943, Wini married Norman (Mike) Clayter, and in 1945, their daughter, Dianne was born. Winifred worked at Glucken’s bra factory, the American Tack factory, and was a quality control supervisor at Avon Products until her retirement. During her lifetime, she was an avid reader. She also loved to play the piano, the organ and do crossword puzzles. She enjoyed crocheting and made beautiful afghans which she gave as gifts. She was also a member of the Brook Presbyterian Church of Hillburn and the Ramapo Senior Citizens Winifred lived a very long and productive life. She departed this life on Sunday, March 27, 2016, at her home in Hillburn, NY. She leaves to celebrate her life a daughter, Dianne L. Clark; one grandchild, Dana D. Clark; one great-grandchild, Sydney B. Clark, niece Karen Martin, nephews Dr. Fred, Stephen and Timothy Morgan, and a host of relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, sister Veola Wallace, brother, Howard E. Morgan, husband, Norman, grandson, Jason C. Clark, and niece Naomi Morgan. Winifred's Funeral Service will be held on Thursday at 11:30 AM at Scarr Funeral Hime friends may call on Thursday from 9:30 AM to 11:00at Funeral Home
