Obituary
Joseph Albert Tery of White Plains, NY, died on 17 November 2018 at the age of 95. While attending college, Mr. Tery worked at NBC Radio, which led to his life-long love and encyclopedic knowledge of the opera and his beloved “Il Maestro,” Arturo Toscanini. After serving at NBC Radio in Philadelphia and New York, Joe transferred his skills to the world of advertising, where he worked for several influential agencies with increasing responsibility from 1947 until he retired as an executive vice president in 1974.
Mr. Tery was born on 8 April 1923 in Brooklyn, NY. He was a graduate of Fordham University and Columbia University, and served in the United States Army during World War II as an intelligence officer. Mr. Tery was a lifelong learner, a polymath steeped in the classics of literature and music, who would fluently converse in multiple languages with equal charm and grace about wide-ranging topics. Mr. Tery was a passionate student of classical music and opera, as well as travel, pursuits matched only by his equally passionate love for animals, and particularly, his dogs.
Mr. Tery was predeceased by his wife, Lorraine W. Tery in 1990, and by his sisters Carol Trocchia, Antoinette Guidice, and Anne Pusateri. He is survived by his nieces Lois E. Johnston, Susan E. Johnston, and D. Samantha Johnston, of Durham, NC; Janelle Skillman of Kingwood, TX; nephews Frederick M. Johnston of Durham, NC and Keith A. Johnston of Middleton, WI; and close, long-time family friend Nancy Casarella of Poughquag, NY.
