Mary Scerno Obituary

Mary L. Scerno (nee De Martini) of Yonkers, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2006 at her home where she resided for the past 63 years and where she had been lovingly cared for by her son Lawrence and daughter-in-law, Maria for the past 30 years. She was born in Brooklyn on January 3, 1912 to Lawrence A. & Rosalia (nee Ferigno) De Martini. After graduating highschool, She worked as a payroll accountant at Austin Nichols. At the age of 21, She married the love of her life, Benedict J. Scerno and had three children, Joseph, Lawrence & Rose Marie. While raising their children, Mary worked at Otis Elevator Co. as a payroll accountant, as well as at Arnold Bakeries. After retiring at age 65, she did volunteer work, teaching children to read. Mary Scerno who embraced all religions, was a parishioner of St. Denis Church, belonged to the Third Order of St. Francis of Assisi at Sacred Heart Church, and to the Jewish Community Center for many years. She is survived by her three loving children; J. Benedict Scerno of Clark Summit, PA; Lawrence A. & daughter-in-law Maria Scerno of Yonkers and Rose Marie Olsen-Castronovo and son-in-law Charles Castronovo of Cortlandt Manor, NY. Her devoted sister Margaret Karalis as well as her cherished grandchildren Kathleen Olsen-Cosentino and her husband Salvatore Cosentino of Alpharetta, GA and grandsons Joseph B. Scerno and wife Debbie Scerno of Jacksonville, FL and George Scerno of Larchmont, NY and a great grandson, Jason Scerno of Jacksonville, FL. Mary Scerno was predeceased by her husband Benedict J. Scerno and grandson, Eric David Olsen. She was also predeceased by her sisters Catherine De Martini, Susan Toman and brothers Ralph and Charles De Martini.
